The True Costs of Ignoring Minor Home Repairs
A dripping faucet is the easiest thing in the world to live with. You stop hearing it after about a week, the door that sticks becomes a door you shoulder open without thinking, and the hairline crack above the bedroom frame turns into part of the wallpaper. None of it stops your day. That is exactly the problem.
What follows is the arithmetic, because the argument for fixing small things early is usually made with adjectives and it works much better with numbers.
Short answer: Small repairs get more expensive in two ways. The work itself grows, and the same job costs more once it becomes urgent. The Handy Geeks bills after-hours work at 1.25x to 1.6x and emergency call-outs at 1.4x to 1.75x, so a $240 repair becomes a $336 to $420 repair purely on timing.
What Does Waiting Actually Cost?
Between 25 and 75 percent more, before the damage itself is counted. That is the multiplier alone. A job you book on a Tuesday for next week costs one number, the same job at 8pm on a Saturday costs another, and the same job when water is coming through a ceiling costs a third. Nothing about the work has changed.
That is the part most people never price in. When you defer a repair you are not choosing between fixing it now and fixing it later at the same cost. You are choosing between fixing it now and fixing it later at a premium you do not control, on a day you do not pick.
Why Is Water The Expensive One?
Because it does two kinds of damage at once, and the first kind is invisible on your wall but very visible on your bill. The EPA’s WaterSense programme puts average household leak waste above 10,000 gallons a year. A single faucet dripping once a second passes 3,000 gallons in the same period.

Then there is the second kind of damage. Water finds drywall, drywall holds it, and the repair stops being a plumbing job and becomes a drywall job plus a plumbing job plus, if it has been going long enough, a flooring job.

Notice the drywall row. It has the widest spread because drywall is the repair where the price is set by what is behind it, and what is behind it is the thing you cannot see from the hallway.
How Much Should You Set Aside A Year?
One to three percent of the property’s value, annually, before any emergency happens. On a $600,000 house that is $6,000 to $18,000. Most owners sit in the lower half of that band until the building passes twenty years old, at which point the systems start arriving at end of life together.
There is a second method worth running next to it, a dollar per square foot per year, so a 2,000 square foot house lands near $2,000. Which Repairs Stop Being A Handyman Job?
In California the line is $1,000 in combined labor and materials, and any permit requirement voids that exemption at any price. Below it, an insured handyman can do the work. Above it, or once a permit is involved, it belongs with a licensed contractor and we will say so before we start rather than after.
AB 2622 moved that threshold from $500 on 1 January 2025, so a good deal of published advice still quotes the old number. Electrical work with burn marks or buzzing, gas, and anything structural sit outside the exemption regardless of price.
