“Best Handyman” Means Nothing. We Know, We Wrote It.

“Best Handyman” Means Nothing. We Know, We Wrote It.

Every company calling itself the best handyman in California or really anywhere is telling you exactly one verifiable thing, which is that they were willing to type it. We know, because we typed it too.

In some of our previous blogs we called ourselves the best handyman in so and so state. The meta description told you we were “currently the best handyman service in all of California.” The body claimed we provided “hands down the best services in all of California, no one even compares.” There was a checklist, with green checkmarks, containing the item “Beats Competition in Every Manner.”

Nobody audited that. No board reviewed it. We wrote it because it was the sort of thing handyman sites write, and because we wanted to rank for the phrase people search.

And honesty, we are just accepting that there is no scrutiny behind such a label, it felt like good marketing because we believe we truly are the best. Our reviews reflected it. We always worked with out clients till we knew we had satisfied them with the best results. And in that regard, we still stay at the top.

tldr; “Best handyman,” “top rated,” and “#1 in California” are unregulated marketing phrases that any business can apply to itself at no cost and with no evidence. What can actually be checked is a license number, a certificate of insurance, third-party verified reviews, and named clients who’ll confirm the work. Ask for those four and the superlatives stop mattering.

Why Anyone Can Say It

Here’s the mechanic behind the whole genre. Superlatives like “best” and “finest” are what advertising law generally treats as puffery, meaning they’re understood as opinion rather than a factual claim, which is precisely why they’re safe to print and worthless to read.

“We’re the best handyman in Los Angeles” makes no testable assertion. Best by what measure? Rated by whom? Across which trades, which years, which price points? There’s no scoring body for handyman work, no governing agency handing out rankings, and no dataset anybody could use to settle it.

Compare that to “we hold CSLB license number 1234567.” That one is either true or false, and you can find out in about ninety seconds.

The badges follow the same logic. Plenty of “Top 10 Handyman in [City]” lists are directories where placement follows advertising spend, or aggregator pages built to collect leads. Some awards are legitimate. Others will sell you the trophy graphic and the press release to go with it. Worth asking who ran the judging and what the criteria were before you treat any of it as information.

What Changed in October 2024

Superlatives are one thing. Manufacturing evidence is a different thing, and it stopped being merely unethical.

The FTC’s Rule on the Use of Consumer Reviews and Testimonials took effect on October 21, 2024, after a unanimous 5-0 vote. It bans buying or selling fake reviews, prohibits paying for reviews expressing a particular sentiment in either direction, requires disclosure when reviews come from company insiders, restricts suppression of negative reviews, and covers fake social media indicators like purchased followers. AI-generated reviews are included.

The teeth are the part worth knowing. For knowing violations, the rule authorizes civil penalties up to $51,744 per violation, and the FTC has published guidance on how it reads its own rule.

The agency didn’t build this for fun. It had already brought actions against Fashion Nova over allegations of suppressing negative reviews and against Vision Path over allegations including paying for positive ones, and it wrote the rule specifically because case-by-case enforcement without penalty authority wasn’t deterring anyone.

We can’t tell you what share of home service companies fake this, and anyone who quotes you a percentage is guessing. What we can tell you is that a federal agency concluded the practice was widespread enough to justify a rule with five-figure per-violation penalties, and that the practice mostly targets exactly the signals homeowners rely on.

What We Can Actually Back Up

Here’s the replacement for the superlatives, limited to things you can independently confirm.

Our reviews are verified through TrustIndex rather than typed into our own website by us. We carry $2 million in general liability coverage, and we’ll email you the certificate directly from the carrier. We’re affiliated with NARPM, the National Association of Residential Property Managers, which is a membership you can check. We’ve worked in properties tied to Pandora, Macy’s, Chanel, and Nordstrom, which matters mainly because that kind of environment doesn’t hand out access to whoever answered an ad.

None of that means we’re the best handyman in California. It means when you ask us to prove something, there’s something to show you. That’s a lower and considerably more useful bar.

How to Test Any Handyman’s Claims in Five Minutes

Use this on us too.

  1. Ask for the license number and the exact legal business name, then look it up at cslb.ca.gov and confirm the name on the record matches the name on your invoice.
  2. Ask for the certificate of insurance to come from the carrier by email, not as a photo of a piece of paper.
  3. Check where the reviews live. Third-party platforms and verified-buyer systems are evidence. Testimonials typed onto a company’s own site are decoration.
  4. Read the two-star and three-star reviews first. How a business answered a complaint tells you more than fifty compliments.
  5. Ask about any award or badge: who judged it, against what criteria, and did money change hands.
  6. Ask for two references from jobs in the last sixty days, then actually call one.

Any business that gets defensive at this list has given you your answer. Our earlier post on handyman red flags and the questions to ask covers the behavioral tells that show up after hiring, and if you want the enforcement side, we wrote about what recent contractor stings revealed.

Why We Bothered Writing This

Our value comes from what customers say after the job, which is the one claim about ourselves we don’t control.

That’s uncomfortable in a way that “we’re the best” never is. A verified review average moves without our permission. A complaint stays visible. A property manager who didn’t get called back tells the next property manager. Superlatives are comfortable precisely because they’re insulated from all of that, and being insulated from feedback is not a quality you should want in the people working on your house.

You can look through completed jobs in our portfolio, see the full range on our services page, or read about who we are. If you’re weighing whether to run a project yourself, our piece on signing your own building permit is worth ten minutes first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official “best handyman” ranking in California?

No. No state agency, licensing board, or trade body ranks handyman companies. Any business can call itself the best handyman at no cost, which is why the phrase carries no information.

Are fake reviews illegal?

Yes. Since October 21, 2024, the FTC’s rule bans buying and selling fake reviews, paying for reviews with a specific sentiment, and certain forms of review suppression, with civil penalties up to $51,744 per violation for knowing violators.

How do I verify a handyman’s reviews are real?

Look for reviews on third-party platforms with verified-buyer systems rather than testimonials hosted on the company’s own site. Read the mid-range reviews, and check whether the business replies to criticism.

Are “Top 10 Handyman” list placements paid?

Often, yes. Many directory rankings track advertising spend or lead-generation deals rather than work quality. Ask who judged the award, what the criteria were, and whether the business paid to appear.

What should I ask a handyman before hiring?

License number, certificate of insurance sent from the carrier, whether the license classification covers your specific work, and two references from recent jobs. Those four beat any slogan.

Final Thoughts

We’re not going to end this by claiming we’re the honest ones, because that’s the same trick wearing a different hat.

What we’ll say instead is narrower. We wrote a post declaring ourselves the best in California, nobody stopped us, and that’s the entire problem with the phrase. It cost us nothing to write and it told you nothing about whether we’d show up on time.

Go check the license. Read the three-star reviews. Ask for the insurance certificate. Then decide.
