Rekeying a retail suite before an 8 AM opening: scheduling an after-hours visit
Lock work that must finish before opening is booked as a scheduled evening or weekend visit, billed at a published multiplier, with the arrival window confirmed in writing. Request the visit at least one business day ahead and name the key count and sign-off contact in the work order.
An 8 AM opening leaves only an evening or weekend window for lock work. Vendors that schedule crews outside business hours publish a multiplier for that work, and the response standard and after-hours terms for commercial property maintenance to ask for are in this guide.
What does an after-hours lock visit cost?
After-hours visits bill at a multiplier on the regular hourly rate. The Handy Geeks publishes 1.25x to 1.6x for scheduled evening and weekend crews, applied to a published Los Angeles range of $105 to $195 per hour, which works out to roughly $131 to $312 per hour.

| Base hourly rate | At 1.25x | At 1.6x |
|---|---|---|
| $105 | $131 | $168 |
| $150 (range midpoint) | $188 | $240 |
| $195 | $244 | $312 |
Figures are arithmetic on published ranges and rounded to the dollar. Confirm whether the multiplier applies to the minimum call and trip fee in the written quote.
What belongs in the work order for a rekey before opening?
A rekey work order states the door list, the number of keys cut, who receives each key, the arrival window and the sign-off contact. The visit ends with each lock tested from both sides and a key log signed by the store manager, so opening day starts without a lockout.
- List every door and say which locks are rekeyed.
- State the key count and the person who receives each key.
- Set the arrival window, for example 6 PM to 8 PM the evening before.
- Name the sign-off contact who will be on site or reachable.
- Ask for a photo of the key log and of each door after testing.
How does our team run a commercial rekey before opening?
Rekeying changes the pins inside each lock so old keys stop working, without replacing the hardware. Under Bernard Toth, our crew counts doors first, books the visit outside business hours, rekeys and tests every lock, and hands over a key log that the store manager signs.
- Walk the door list with the manager and mark which locks to rekey and which are too worn to rekey.
- Confirm the key count and who receives each key.
- Rekey every lock on the list, then test each one with the new key.
- Fill in the key log with a name and date for each key and ask the manager to sign it.
- Photograph the log and send it with the closeout note.
Opening day then starts with a known set of keys and a record of who holds them.
Hardware on the same entrance may need attention too; see how to separate hinge, pivot and closer problems on a storefront door, and how to audit arrival windows if a visit is missed.
