- Set the motion zones before you leave. Trim the street out of the frame and keep the walkway and the step.

Does California Law Limit What Your Doorbell Records?
Video of your own porch is generally fine. Audio is where California differs from most states, and it is worth two minutes of your attention before the camera goes live.
California is a two-party consent state. Penal Code section 632 makes it an offence to record a confidential communication without consent from everyone party to it. Section 632.7 extends similar protection to certain wireless and cordless communications. A doorbell camera pointed at your own entry is not usually the problem. A camera whose microphone reaches a neighbour’s patio, a shared hallway in a duplex, or the inside of an adjacent unit can be.
Two practical steps cover most of it. Put a visible notice at the entry saying audio and video recording is in use, which undercuts any claim that a conversation there was confidential. And turn the microphone off, or narrow the audio range in the app, if the device covers shared space.
