Las Vegas Handyman Services
Short answer: The Handy Geeks provides residential and commercial handyman services in Las Vegas and Clark County, Nevada. Rates run $50 to $130 per hour residential, $80 to $160 per hour commercial. We are insured to $2M general liability. Nevada has the strictest licensing rules of any state we operate in: plumbing, electrical, HVAC and refrigeration require a licence at any dollar amount.
Las Vegas is our newest market and the one where licensing matters the most. Every state we operate in has a minor-work exemption, and in California, Arizona, and Florida that exemption covers nearly all of what a handyman does. Nevada is different. The $1,000 threshold exists, but the carve-outs are so broad that a significant portion of routine maintenance work falls outside the exemption entirely. That shapes what we offer here, and we are transparent about it.
We have been servicing commercial properties in the Las Vegas metro alongside our residential work, and the same crews handle both.
What Handyman Work Costs in Las Vegas
Las Vegas is our most affordable market. The rates reflect Nevada’s lower cost of living relative to California, and the large pool of tradespeople who relocated here during the last decade’s construction boom.
| Service type | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| General handyman (residential) | $50 to $130/hr | Interior and exterior maintenance |
| Commercial maintenance | $80 to $160/hr | Retail, office, restaurant, property management |
| Door and hardware repair | $65 to $200 | Per unit, parts included |
| Drywall patch and paint | $60 to $230 | Per area, texture matching costs more |
| Furniture assembly | $50 to $150 | Per unit, complexity varies |
| Picture hanging and mounting | $50 to $120 | Per session, includes anchors |

Nevada’s Licensing Rules: The Strictest in Our Network
Nevada’s contractor licensing is administered by the Nevada State Contractors Board (NSCB), and the rules are materially different from California, Arizona, and Florida.
The general minor-work exemption under NRS 624.031(6) sets a $1,000 threshold for work that does not require a permit, similar to our other markets. But Nevada adds an exception that none of the other states have:
Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration work requires a Nevada contractor’s licence at any dollar amount. There is no minor-work exemption for these trades. A $150 outlet replacement that is perfectly legal for a handyman to perform in California, Arizona, or Florida requires a licensed contractor in Nevada. A $200 faucet cartridge swap is the same story.

Nevada also has the most aggressive anti-splitting rule: $500, compared to $1,000 in the other three states. That means breaking a $900 project into two $450 invoices does not just void the exemption — it violates the statute at a lower threshold than anywhere else.
What We Can and Cannot Do in Nevada
Here is the practical breakdown:
Work we perform in Las Vegas: drywall repair, painting, door and hardware installation, furniture assembly, picture hanging, shelving, general carpentry, tile repair (non-plumbing), caulking and sealing, pressure washing, fence and gate repair, weather stripping, and similar general maintenance work under the $1,000 threshold where no permit is required.
Work we do not perform in Las Vegas: any plumbing, any electrical, any HVAC, any refrigeration. These require a Nevada contractor’s licence regardless of cost. We will refer you to a licensed Nevada contractor for these jobs.
We are transparent about this because the alternative is worse. A handyman who tells you they can swap your faucet cartridge in Nevada without a licence is either uninformed about the statute or choosing to ignore it. Either way, the NSCB investigates complaints actively, and unlicensed trade work carries civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation.
How Las Vegas Compares to Our Other Markets
The licensing comparison is worth seeing side by side, because the differences are not obvious until you look at specific jobs.
| Work type | CA | AZ | FL | NV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drywall patch under $1K | OK | OK | OK | OK |
| Door closer swap | OK | OK | OK | OK |
| Faucet cartridge ($200) | OK | OK | OK | Licence required |
| Outlet replacement ($150) | OK | OK | OK | Licence required |
| Water heater swap | Licence + permit | Licence, no permit* | Licence + permit | Licence required |
*Phoenix only: like-for-like water heater replacement in 1-2 family dwellings is permit-exempt (PBCC § 105.2.4(5)).

The Desert and Your Property
Las Vegas shares some of Phoenix’s heat problems, but at 2,000 feet higher elevation with lower humidity and more intense UV. The damage pattern is slightly different.
UV degradation is the primary issue. Exterior paint on a south-facing wall fades faster in Las Vegas than in any of our other markets because the thinner atmosphere at elevation lets more UV through. Exterior caulk and sealant follow the same pattern. We see two-year lifespans on exterior silicone that lasts five years in Southern California.
Dust is the secondary issue. Las Vegas sits in a valley that traps particulates, and every monsoon storm blows fine sand into every gap in a building envelope. Door sweeps, weather stripping, and window track maintenance are more frequent items here than in any of our other markets. If you manage a commercial property with sliding doors, budget for track cleaning and weather strip replacement twice a year rather than annually.
Areas We Serve in Las Vegas

Frequently Asked Questions
What Can a Handyman Legally Do in Nevada?
A handyman in Nevada can perform general maintenance and repair work under $1,000 in combined labor and materials where no building permit is required. However, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration work requires a Nevada contractor’s licence at any dollar amount. There is no minor-work exemption for these trades under NRS 624.031(6)(b).
How Do Las Vegas Handyman Rates Compare to Other Cities?
Las Vegas is the most affordable market we serve. Residential rates run $50 to $130 per hour compared to $70 to $160 in Los Angeles and $55 to $135 in Phoenix. Commercial rates run $80 to $160 per hour compared to $105 to $195 in Los Angeles. The lower cost of living and deep labor pool keep rates below our California markets.
Are You Licensed with the Nevada State Contractors Board?
We are not currently licensed with the NSCB. We operate within the minor-work exemption under NRS 624.031(6), performing general maintenance and repair work under $1,000 that does not require a building permit and does not involve plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or refrigeration. We carry $2M general liability insurance.
Why Do You Not Do Plumbing or Electrical in Las Vegas?
Nevada law requires a contractor’s licence for all plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration work regardless of the dollar amount. Unlike California, Arizona, and Florida, there is no minor-work exemption for these trades. We follow the law and refer trade work to licensed Nevada contractors rather than risk penalties up to $10,000 per violation.
What Is Your Service Area in Las Vegas?
We serve Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Summerlin, Spring Valley, Enterprise, Paradise, Sunrise Manor, Whitney, and Winchester. Coverage is concentrated in Clark County. If your location is not listed, call us to check availability.
We also serve South Florida and Phoenix and Scottsdale. Phoenix shares some of the same desert climate challenges but with different licensing rules — Arizona’s R-62 licence class has no equivalent in Nevada.
Final Thoughts
Las Vegas is the market where knowing what you cannot do matters as much as knowing what you can. We operate within Nevada’s licensing rules rather than around them, and we are upfront about the scope of work we handle here. If the job is general maintenance under the $1,000 threshold and does not involve plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or refrigeration, we do it. If it requires a licensed contractor, we tell you and refer you to one.
