How to Install A Door – DIY Step-by-Step Guide
Introduction: Installing a door can seem challenging but with the right tools and guidance, you can DIY it. You of course need patience, and the ability to follow steps correctly to make it a success. But if you want to get someone else to do it – no worries. We, The Handy Geeks are here at your service ;).
How It Works:
1. Gather Your Tools and Materials:
These will be tools you need:
- New door (pre-hung or slab)
- Measuring tape
- Screwdriver (or drill with screwdriver bits)
- Hammer
- Level
- Shims
- Hinges
- Screws
- Door hardware (knob, handle, lockset)
- Wood glue (if needed)
- Saw (if trimming is required)
- Wood filler (for any gaps)
2. Measuring Door Frame:
- You need to accurately measure the height, width and the depth of the door frame.
- Now based on these measurements, you need to get a door with marching dimensions whilst allowing for 1/8th of an inch for clearance.
- And if you’re considering installing a pre-hung door, do check that the frame is square.
3. Prepare your Door Frame:
- Ensure your door frame is level, and square before installing.
- Please make sure to fix any damages.
- If you are using an existing door, then you must trim it accordingly to match the door frame if needed.
4. Install the Hinges:
If you’re using a pre-hung door, the hinges will already be installed on the door. For a slab door:
- Mark the hinge placement on the door and frame.
- Use a chisel to create spaces for the hinges in both the door and frame.
- Install the hinges on the door by screwing them into the pre-marked locations.
5. Hanging Door:
- If using a pre-hung door, all you will need to do is just simply insert the door into the frame, aligning its hinges with the corresponding spaces given in the door frame.
- Using shims to adjust the door’s position, we will ensure that it is level and the gap between the door and frame is consistent throughout.
-
If your door is a slab, you will have to first place the hinges into the frame, lift your door, and then secure it by screwing the hinges where space is alloted.
6. Check the Alignment:
- Please use a level to make sure your door is hanging straight. You can check the gap between your door and it’s frame to ensure that all sides are uniformly equal.
- If there is any need of adjusting, inset more shims to get a more precise fit.
7. Install the Door Hardware:
- Mark the place where you want to install the door handle, knob, and lockset.
- Now you will mark the areas where you want to install the door handle, knob and the lockset.
- The instructions for on how to install these “door hardwares” can be found on your manufacturers guide and should be usually enough to guide you. However if help is needed, you can refer to sources on youtube!
8. Testing:
- Now these are the final “testing” parts. You should test to see if the door is gliding smoothly.
- Check if there is any more need of trimming and do as needed. (more guides on this coming)
- If needed, you can use wood filler to fill in the gaps of screws etc. Sand it to get a nice texture.
9. Paint or Stain (Optional):
- Optionally, you can also paint your door to meet your aesthetic requirements.
